Cigna Medical Group Joins SkySong Community

A medical facility outside of Skysong Awards

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (March 17, 2021) —SkySong, The ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center today announced that Cigna Medical Group (CMG) is opening a new, innovative health care center in SkySong 4, located in Scottsdale.

CMG signed a long-term lease for an almost 9,000 square foot space on the ground floor of SkySong 4. The facility will open this fall, and will provide current and new patients with multiple services under one roof, including family and adult medicine, diabetes care and laboratory services, and an onsite pharmacy. This is the first medical office on the site.

“We are excited to open a new health care center within the SkySong community,” said Cigna Medical Group President Matthew Bennett. “The center will be in a convenient and central location, allowing us to grow and serve more patients in a modern, comfortable setting. Becoming a part of such a dynamic mixed-use environment will also help advance our innovation efforts through opportunities for collaboration with other companies in the community and Arizona State University.”

SkySong is also home to Banner Innovation Group, a department within Banner Health focused on purposeful and disciplined innovation, and Arizona State University, so there is opportunity for significant health care collaboration. Additionally, a broad spectrum of startup companies have worked with ASU SkySong in the health care space over the more than 12 years the project has been open.

Sharon Harper, Chairman and CEO of Plaza Companies, the project’s master developer, said the discussions with CMG were focused on creating opportunities for innovation and collaboration between entities in the health care industry.

“SkySong is truly an ideal fit for a facility such as the one that Cigna Medical Group will be operating, and we are pleased to expand our mixed-use project to include a true medical use,” she said. “Health care is a dynamic and fast-growing industry that is front of mind during the pandemic and at the center of the global economy. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this new facility will have on the community as a whole.”

Sally C. Morton, executive vice president, ASU Knowledge Enterprise, said CMG is an ideal addition to the SkySong tenant roster.

“Cigna Medical Group has been an innovator in the health care industry in Arizona for many years,” Morton said. “They are a strong addition to projects such as SkySong and our Novus Innovation corridor, and will provide an important new contribution to the overall success of the project. We look forward to connecting our talent and assets with the medical group.”

The Coppola Cheney Group of Lee & Associates, SkySong’s leasing broker, represented the property ownership group. Cigna Medical Group was represented in the transaction by Bryce Terveen and AJ Whitehead of CBRE.

SkySong is a 42-acre mixed use development designed to:

  • Create an ecology of collaboration and innovation among high-profile technology enterprises and related researchers;
  • Advance global business objectives of on-site enterprises;
  • Raise Arizona’s profile as a global center of innovation through co-location of ASU’s strategic global partners; and
  • Create a unique regional economic and social asset.

Companies located at SkySong have the opportunity to partner with Arizona State University, which has more than 100,000 students studying across four metropolitan Phoenix campuses, in Lake Havasu City, Los Angeles and Washington D.C. ASU is one of the largest public universities in the nation, with the majority of its students attending its campus in Tempe, Arizona, less than three miles from SkySong.

In addition to locating its own innovative research units at the center, through ASU’s on-site operations, tenant companies have a single point of contact for introductions to researchers, faculty and programs to address their specific needs.
